An urgent meeting of the UN Security Council will be held on August 23 at the request of Russia in connection with the ongoing provocations of Ukraine in relation to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, informed First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky in his Telegram channel.

“In connection with the ongoing Ukrainian provocations against ZNPP, we requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on the agenda item “threats to international peace and security,” he said.

UN Secretary General António Guterres is also expected to speak at the meeting. In addition, Ukrainian topics will be discussed today at a meeting on international security and on August 24 at a meeting requested by Western states.

“Thus, the UN Security Council will discuss various aspects of the Ukrainian crisis this week for three days in a row,” Polyansky concluded.

On August 16, it became known about the start of preparations for the second IAEA mission to ZNPP. According to Mikhail Ulyanov, permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, the preparations are still going slowly because of the vacation of the director of the agency, Rafael Grossi.

On August 11, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned that shelling of the ZNPP by the Ukrainian military could lead to catastrophic consequences, exceeding the Chernobyl explosion in scale, and the catastrophe could affect not only Russia and Ukraine, but also European countries.

Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near the town of Energodar. Four days after the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, Russian troops took control of the station. Subsequently, Energodar and the station were repeatedly shelled by the Ukrainian military.
