September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. According to the latest data World Health Organization (for 2019), every year more than 700 thousand people in the world commit suicide. That is, suicide accounts for more than one in every 100 deaths (1.3%). Three-quarters of all suicides occur in middle- and low-income countries. In more than half of cases (58%), people under the age of 50 commit suicide. In the age group from 15 to 29 years, suicide is among the top 5 causes of death.
According to the WHO, Russia is in the top 10 countries in terms of overall suicide mortality rate (the ratio of the total number of deaths during a calendar year to the average annual population). At the same time, in the Russian Federation, as in the vast majority of other countries of the world, the level of male mortality from suicide significantly exceeds the level of female mortality. If on average in 2019 the country recorded 25 deaths per 100 thousand of the population, then among men the mortality rate was 44 per 100 thousand of the population, and among women – 9.
