Reuters: Erdogan to discuss Mir system at meeting on Friday

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to hold a meeting on economic issues on Friday, September 23, at which the Russian payment system Mir will be discussed. According to the agency, as part of the “high-level” meeting, they also plan to discuss the general economic situation in the country, including “agreements with Russia and the recent volatility on the Istanbul Stock Exchange.” Additionally, according to Reuters, the possibility of introducing new Western sanctions against Russia will also be considered.

Today, September 22, Vladimir Komlev, General Director of the National Payment Card System acknowledgedthat Russian citizens had problems with cards of Turkish payment systems. However, according to him, only two partner banks have suspended cooperation with the Mir payment system. The other three continue to work.

Earlier it became known that the two largest Turkish banks – Is Bankasi and DenizBank – stopped servicing Russian Mir cards due to the US promise to impose sanctions for supporting the Russian payment system and the National Payment Card System abroad.
