Putin: the standard of living of people in Europe is thrown "into the furnace of the sanctions furnace"

The quality of life of people in Europe is deteriorating, the European authorities are sacrificing it in order to continue to exert sanctions pressure on Russia. This statement was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his speech at the plenary session at the Eastern Economic Forum.

“The achieved level of industrial development in Europe, the quality of life of people, socio-economic stability – all this is thrown into the furnace of the sanctions furnace,” Putin said (quoted by TASS).

He added that European countries are imposing restrictive measures “at the behest of Washington” and thereby sacrificing their economies “for the sake of preserving the US dictatorship in world affairs.”

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine on February 24, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia, which, among other things, affected the energy sector. In particular, the United States imposed a ban on the supply of oil, gas and other energy resources from Russia. Canada also banned the import of petroleum products from Russia. The decision to abandon Russian energy carriers was also made in Australia.

In addition, the UK authorities announced plans to gradually stop importing Russian oil by the end of 2022, and then stop buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia as soon as possible. In early June, the EU imposed a partial embargo on Russian oil, and on August 10, an embargo on the purchase of coal from Russia began to operate.

Earlier, Putin has repeatedly stated that Europe itself is feeling the negative consequences of sanctions. The European authorities emphasize that the difficulties that have arisen are the price for Europe’s independence from Russia and its energy resources.

Thus, due to the restriction of fuel supplies and the reduction in the volume of gas pumped through the Nord Stream, the price of energy carriers has risen sharply in Europe. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz acknowledged that many Germans are facing rising petrol and food prices. Nevertheless, he declared the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia. Scholz stressed that the restrictions will last as long as necessary to support Ukraine.
