Putin signs law on requirements for keeping animals in pet stores and bird markets


Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law establishing requirements for keeping animals in places used for their trade. Law published on the portal of legal information. State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said that additional requirements would protect animals from cruel treatment in pet stores and bird markets. The law comes into force on March 1, 2023.

“We are talking about pet stores and bird markets, where animals are kept in unacceptable conditions - hungry, in cramped and dirty cages, without proper care and veterinary care. It is obvious that such situations must be excluded. The document gives the Government the authority to establish requirements for places of sale of animals,” said Vyacheslav Volodin, his words are quoted on site State Duma.

Previously, the government did not set requirements for places where animals were sold. The author of the bill is Vladimir Burmatov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Ecology. Previously, he reported that in pet stores and bird markets it is impossible to create the necessary conditions for animals, to provide proper care and veterinary care.
