Putin and Erdogan agreed to hold a personal meeting

Presidents of Russia and Turkey Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to hold a bilateral face-to-face meeting in the foreseeable future, but the date and place have not yet been determined. This was announced by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.

“When Putin called and congratulated Erdogan on his victory in the elections, on his re-election as President of the Republic of Turkey, the presidents confirmed their intention to hold a bilateral meeting in the foreseeable future. Where it will be and when exactly, this remains to be agreed upon, taking into account the schedules of the two presidents. But there is such an understanding that we are already preparing for such a meeting,” he said.

On May 28, the second round of presidential elections took place in Turkey. According to the results of counting 99.85% of the votes, Erdogan received 52.16%, and his rival Kemal Kılıçdaroglu - 47.84%. On May 14, when the first round of the presidential elections took place, they won 49.5% and 44.8% of the vote, respectively. It was decided to organize a second round after none of the candidates on May 14 passed the mark of 50% of the votes required to win in the first round.

Putin congratulated Erdogan with a victory in the elections, calling it natural. He pointed out that Moscow highly appreciates Erdogan's personal contribution to strengthening friendly relations between the two countries and mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas. Putin also reaffirmed his readiness to continue dialogue with the re-elected president on "bilateral, regional and international agendas."

Putin and Erdogan last met on the sidelines of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Astana on October 13, 2022. They discussed including the development of a grain deal and the creation of a gas hub. After that, the leaders of the states conducted only telephone conversations. In particular, on May 29, Putin and Erdogan by phone confirmed his attitude "for further joint work on the entire current agenda." The parties agreed to continue personal contacts.
