Producer Rudchenko doubted the prospects of singer Max Barsky in the West

“They won’t be able to sell themselves as artists”

Ukrainian singer Max Barskikh has previously announced that he has changed his pseudonym to Mick Sunday and intends to soon release an entirely English-language album. Music critic and producer Pavel Rudchenko believes that artists from the post-Soviet space simply have no place in the West, and Barskikh will not be able to succeed there.

In conversation with NEWS.ru Rudchenko noted that “our Slavic brothers” naively assume that someone in the West will be interested in their work. According to the producer, they are wrong, especially since they also have their own nuances. He clarified that in terms of sound, domestic and allied artists managed to catch up with Europe, but in terms of “semantic loads” abroad, everything is perceived in a completely different way.

As an example, Rudchenko cited the songs of Western artists such as Katy Perry or rapper Drake, comparing them with performers in the post-Soviet space. According to the producer, what they are trying to do with us “does not work” in the West, because it is necessary to focus on “mentality”.

He added that the work of performers from Ukraine was needed only in Russia and in the post-Soviet space, leaving this market, they will receive “just a donut”, after which they will start arranging for their Western colleagues. According to Rudchenko, they will no longer be able to sell themselves as artists. Moreover, the producer clarified that it would also be impossible to leave on a certain pity for the Ukrainian people, since the topic of Ukraine is toxic in the West.
