Printemps tries the American adventure in New York

Wishing to strengthen its visibility in the world, the group will open a store in the Wall Street district.

New stage in the internationalization of Printemps. The group will open a department store in New York, in the Wall Street district, in the spring of 2024, it announced on Wednesday. This will be its second location outside France, after the one in Doha, Qatar, which is due to open in October.

The New York department store will be six times smaller than its Gulf counterpart (5,000 m2 against 30,000m2). “We adapt our stores to the specificities of each country. In Doha, we are in a luxury hub. In New York, we will target a mixed clientele, made up of New Yorkers and tourists, with a strong offer of experiences”we explain within the group, which is owned by a Qatari fund.

The New York location was not chosen by chance: the building, at One Wall Street, dates from the 1930s and is one of the city's monuments. The Wall Street district is changing.

Formerly stronghold of finance, it now hosts companies from all sectors and more and more housing. New York has no shortage of department stores (Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Saks…). Nevertheless, Le Printemps believes it has its card to play. And the luxury market is doing very well in the United States.

Printemps wants to continue its international expansion by targeting the major tourist capitals. “We have no further announcements to make at this time. But we are exploring opportunities”, says one within the group. Its major competitor, Galeries Lafayette, is already present in Berlin, Beijing, Jakarta, Dubai, Doha, Shanghai and Luxembourg. In Paris, the two great rivals on Boulevard Haussmann took advantage of the return of tourists this summer.
