Controversy over translation continues on social media
The authorities of Ukraine have been trying to eradicate the Russian language and culture in the country for a long period. So, in Odessa, the song “At the Black Sea”, which was performed by Leonid Utyosov, was recently translated into Ukrainian. The writer Zakhar Prilepin spoke about this, noting that the Odessans themselves perceive this with great negativity.
In a post on his Telegram channel, Prilepin noted that the composition was translated well, if one tries to be objective. According to the writer, any translation from one language to another cannot be possible without compromises and losses, so he sees no point in comparing the legendary original and the attempted translation.
Nevertheless, Prilepin considers the reaction of the inhabitants of Odessa to this version of the song interesting. The writer said that for three days, disputes on this issue have been going on in social networks, in which many local residents express “total, sometimes aggressive rejection” of the Ukrainian version of the composition.
Prilepin gave several examples of publications by social media users who stated that in Ukraine they dared to “encroach on our sacred”, and also that the new version cannot be compared with the original in beauty and melody. The writer emphasized that the “slice of sentiment” indicates that it will not be possible to “Ukrainize” Odessa “soon”, adding a comment from a social media user that Odessa is not to blame, that “Ukraine was built around it.”
