The countries of the European Union (EU) must decide on a voluntary basis to reduce electricity consumption, Portuguese Minister for the Environment and Climate Duarte Cordeiro said. The European Commission (EC) on the eve proposed to all European countries to reduce electricity consumption by 10%.

Mr. Cordeiro explained that Portugal generally agrees to such measures, but believes that “there are aspects that can be clarified.” “Considering that the benefits (of the proposed measures.— “b”) is not yet obvious, we ask you to consider them on a voluntary basis,” he told the TV channel CNN Portugal.

In July the EU agreed plan to reduce gas demand by 15% this winter. At the end of August EC announcedthat will take emergency measures to reduce electricity prices. European countries authorities singled out €114 billion to help individuals and companies due to rising electricity prices. Portugal, in particular, will spend €2.4 billion for these purposes.
