Senators Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) introduced a bill to recognize Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism” bypassing the State Department, transmits Politico. Now this list includes Cuba, Syria, Iran and North Korea.
“We are well aware that the administration has a different opinion on this issue. With all due respect, I disagree,” Blumenthal said.
In July, the US Senate accepted resolution in which the State Department called on Russia to be included in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism. Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi spoke Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that if he does not recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism”, then Congress will do it.
As a rule, it is the US State Department that puts countries on the list of “sponsors of terrorism”, but he opposed such a step in relation to Russia. According to the representative of the department, Ned Price, this can lead to undesirable consequences. The White House takes a similar position.
The State Department believes that adding Russia to this list will lead to problems in the American and global economy. Compared to the four states that the United States has recognized as “sponsors of terrorism,” Russia is much more integrated into the world economy, according to the department. In particular, the “grocery deal”, which allows ships with grain to leave the blocked Black Sea ports, may be at risk. In addition, the US presidential administration fears that the recognition of Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism” will complicate the process of returning Paul Whelan and Britney Griner, who are now in Russia.
Russia warned The United States that its recognition as a “sponsor of terrorism” would lead to a severance of diplomatic relations with the United States, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned. According to her, such a step will be a “point of no return” in relations between Moscow and Washington.
11 August The Saeima of Latvia acknowledged Russia as a sponsor of terrorism. Rihards Kols, Chairman of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Russia has repeatedly directly or indirectly supported terrorist regimes, in particular, supplied weapons to the Syrian authorities.
