The situation in the world is extremely tense and alarming, said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

“The situation as a whole is really alarming. You are talking about such a project, symbolic, but if we talk about the situation that we actually have, especially in Europe and the world, then it is really extremely tense, ”Peskov said, commenting on the news that the hands of the Doomsday Clock reached a record close to nuclear midnight.

According to him, the prospects for the development of the situation in the world, taking into account the line that was chosen by NATO under the leadership of the United States, so far “do not promise any elements of detente.” Peskov stated the need to “soberly look into the eyes of this tension and be aware of what is happening.”

On the eve of December 24, it became known that the symbolic hands of the Doomsday Clock translated 10 seconds closer to nuclear midnight. According to Rachel Bronson, President of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, humanity is living in a time of unprecedented peril and the Doomsday Clock reflects that reality. “The US government, its NATO allies and Ukraine have many channels for dialogue; we urge leaders to use all of them to the fullest in order to turn back the clock,” she stressed.

The Doomsday Clock is a project of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists of the University of Chicago, begun in 1947 by the creators of America’s first atomic bomb. Periodically, the cover of the magazine publishes an image of a clock with hour and minute hands showing a few minutes to midnight.
