The brother of American citizen Paul Whelan, who was convicted in Russia for espionage, told Interfax on Saturday that Paul called and reported that he had been transferred to a prison hospital.
“Paul is still able to talk to our parents on the phone every day,” said David Whelan.
According to him, on Friday the convict told his mother and father that on September 16 he was being transferred back to the prison hospital IK-21.
Whelan also told his relatives that he “did not seek medical help and did not know what kind of help he would receive.”
Whelan’s lawyers said they were not aware of the transfer of their client. “No one told us anything about this,” lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov said. But he did not rule out that “taking into account the discussion of a possible exchange, he could be transferred to a hospital for a general examination.”
David Whelan also spoke about their sister Elizabeth’s meeting with US President Joe Biden. The brother of the convict did not disclose the details of the conversation, referring to the confidentiality of the conversation.
Whelan is a citizen of the United States, Ireland, Canada and the United Kingdom. On June 15, 2020, he was sentenced in Moscow to 16 years in prison for espionage. The American is serving his sentence in the Mordovian correctional colony No. 17 of a strict regime.
