Pashinyan reports 49 dead due to shelling on the border with Azerbaijan

As a result of shelling on the border with Azerbaijan, at least 49 people from the Armenian side were killed, this figure is not final. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan during an emergency statement.

“At the moment, according to the Ministry of Defense, we have 49 dead, but these numbers are not final,” said Pashinyan (quote according to TASS).

On the night of September 13, the Armenian Defense Ministry announced that Azerbaijani troops fired on the border settlements in the south-east of the country – Sotk, Goris and Jermuk. The department reported on the dead and injured. The administration building of Sotk village was also damaged. During the emergency statement, Pashinyan clarified that at first the Azerbaijani troops attacked the border in four directions, and then “two or three more directions” were added.

Government of Armenia reportedthat appealed to Russia, the CSTO and the UN Security Council because of the actions of the Azerbaijani army. Later, information appeared in the Azerbaijani media that the parties agreed on a ceasefire from 09:00 local time (08:00 Moscow time).

In connection with the escalation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, Pashinyan had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The prime minister of the republic called the actions of the Azerbaijani troops a “provocation”. Later, Pashinyan also phoned French President Emmanuel Macron and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Also the situation discussed Defense Ministers of Russia and Armenia Sergei Shoigu and Suren Papikyan. The head of the Armenian military department told his colleague about the “large-scale aggression of Azerbaijan,” the press service of the republic’s defense ministry noted. The ministers also agreed to take steps to stabilize the situation in the region.

In turn, Azerbaijan insists that the situation on the border was exacerbated by the actions of Yerevan. The country’s Defense Ministry reported that Armenian troops had mined areas and supply routes between the positions of the Azerbaijani army. The agency also pointed to shelling from the Armenian side. According to the ministry, there are dead and injured.
