Pashinyan reported 135 dead due to shelling on the border with Azerbaijan

As a result, 135 people were killed by shelling on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border from the Armenian side. This was announced by the Prime Minister of the Republic Nikol Pashinyan at a government meeting.

“To date, the number of confirmed deaths is 135 people. This number is not yet final, there are many wounded,” said Pashinyan (quote according to TASS).

September 14 Premier declaredthat the death toll on the border with Azerbaijan increased to 105 people. On the day of the incident, Pashinyan reported 49 victims. Then he emphasizedthat the death toll is not final.

On the eve of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan declaredthat 71 servicemen from the Azerbaijani side were killed during the shelling.

The aggravation of the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan occurred on the night of September 13. According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, Azerbaijani troops fired on the border settlements in the south-east of the country – Sotk, Goris and Jermuk.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, in turn, accused Armenia of the escalation. They noted that the Armenian side has been “intensively shelling” the positions of the Azerbaijani army in the Kalbajar, Lachin, Dashkesan and Gadabay directions for the past month. In addition, Armenia mined areas and supply routes between the positions of the Azerbaijani army, the ministry added.

After the night shelling, the Armenian government turned to Russia, the CSTO and the UN Security Council. Pashinyan also called Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu. As a result, Baku and Yerevan, through the mediation of Moscow, were able to agree on a ceasefire from 09:00 Moscow time. On the same day, an emergency meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council was held.

But on the morning of September 14, shelling continued. The Armenian Defense Ministry reported that the Azerbaijani military used artillery, mortars and other weapons in the direction of the Armenian settlements of Jermuk and Verin Shorzha.

Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan unilaterally proposed Armenian humanitarian ceasefire. The next day with the Security Council of Armenia told about reaching a truce with Azerbaijan. The ceasefire agreement was reached with the assistance of the international community, the Security Council specified.
