Oscar nomination scandal: Mikhalkov became the "master of the cinema world"

He did not even warn the head of the Russian Oscar Committee Chukhrai about Russia’s refusal not to participate in the film award.

Nikita Mikhalkov felt like the ruler of the entire Russian cinema world and made statements about Russia’s refusal to participate in the nomination for the Oscar film award. Without informing even the head of the Russian Oscar committee, Pavel Chukhrai.

The Oscars will take place for the 95th time on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles. All countries have begun nominating their potential applicants. There are 122 paintings in the Russian long list. Among them are “Off-season” by Alexander Khant, which is successfully going through Europe in these troubled days as part of a unique author’s tour, “December” by Klim Shipenko about Yesenin’s last days, “Nuuccia” by Vladimir Munkuev filmed in Yakutia, “Heart of Parma” by Anton Megerdichev by novel by Alexei Ivanov, “The First Oscar” by Sergei Mokritsky.

On the evening of September 26, the head of the Russian Oscar committee, Pavel Chukhrai, learned that Russia would not nominate its own nominees for the Academy Awards. It reported that such a decision was made by the Presidium of the Russian Film Academy. Well, at least they were not ashamed to add that not everyone agrees with him. For example, Andrei Konchalovsky and Alexei Uchitel hold the opposite point of view. But the position of Mikhalkov triumphed, considering it pointless to represent his interests in a country that denies the existence of Russia.

On the same night, Pavel Chukhrai, the chairman of the Russian Oscar Committee, appointed to this post after the death of Vladimir Menshov, voluntarily resigned. He wrote a letter about this to colleagues. “This, in my opinion, an illegal decision was made over the head of the Oscar commission. The members of our independent organization were not only not consulted, they did not even consider it necessary to notify us of such a decision. This is offensive and illegal. I want to notify you that in protest I am resigning from my duties as chairman and resigning from this organization.”

Note that in the United States not a word was said about the refusal to participate in Russian films. That is, Mikhalkov worked ahead of the curve. What is it to him? “Oscar” has, the second will definitely never get.

Maybe it’s the ambitious plans of our famous director? Recall that in May, Mikhalkov announced his intention to create a Eurasian film academy and establish a kind of Eurasian “Oscar” under the bold name “Diamond Butterfly”. The price of the issue is 3-5 million dollars. Mikhalkov said this during the first Eurasian Economic Forum in Bishkek. Thus, he decided to protect the Eurasian civilization from a possible threat.

Then colleagues laughed at the greed of the head of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, who once again wanted to receive exorbitant money from the state for an unnecessary undertaking. Let us recall his fiasco in the field of organizing a fast food chain, when, in company with his brother Andrei Konchalovsky, he claimed exorbitant subsidies. Apparently, cinema, in the understanding of Nikita Sergeevich, is the same fast food: tasteless, unhealthy, but everyone steals it.
