Nord Stream AG: Nord Stream damage is unprecedented

The project operator Nord Stream AG said that the destruction that occurred on the same day simultaneously on three strings of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 offshore gas pipelines is “unprecedented”. The company notes that it is not yet possible to estimate the timing of the restoration of pipeline operation.

The day before, on September 27, Nord Stream 2 AG, which services the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, informed about a sharp drop in pressure on line A from 300 to 7 bar. State of emergency at Nord Stream 2 happened in Danish waters near Bornholm. Later pressure fell on two strings of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline at once. The Swedish Maritime Authority also fixed gas leaks in Swedish and Danish waters. The cause of the accident was not reported.

According to the German newspaper Tagesspiegel, one of the reasons for the pressure drop in gas pipelines could become sabotage. Analysts believe that repairs, based on similar cases, could take up to several years. According to Nord Stream 2 AG spokesman Ulrich Lissek, establishing the reasons for the drop in pressure "is complicated by the sanctions regime and the lack of personnel on the ground."
