Nefertiti's tomb found in Egypt

Nefertiti's tomb found in Egypt

One of the main archaeological mysteries solved, says Egyptologist Zahi Hawass

For many years, archaeologists have searched for the tomb of the most famous Egyptian queen, Nefertiti. There were many versions of the location of the burial, but none was confirmed. However, the other day the ex-minister of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, the famous archaeologist Zahi Hawass, made a sensational statement: the tomb was found! The researcher claims that the remains of the queen lie next to the burial chamber of Tutankhamun, in a secret tomb numbered KV21, which was discovered at the beginning of the 19th century.

According to Zahi Hawass, Nefertiti was buried in a secluded place next to Tutankhamun's burial chamber. In this tomb, the archaeologist found two mummies. In his opinion, the remains of one of them belong to Ankhesenamun (Tutankhamun's main wife), and the others to Nefertiti, Ankhesenamun's mother. This is indicated by the drawings found near the alleged tomb of Nefertiti, where, according to the Egyptologist, Tutankhamun is depicted burying his wife's mother.

In addition, a DNA test was done, which showed that the woman, whose remains are attributed to Nefertiti, was about 45 years old at the time of death. It is believed that it was at this age that the beautiful Nefertiti died, during which a revolutionary religious reform took place: monotheism was introduced (the solar Aton was proclaimed the main deity).

“We have DNA samples from almost all the mummies of the XVIII dynasty, starting with Akhenaten. Comparing them with those in KV21, we can confidently say that the mystery of Nefertiti has finally been solved, ”says Hawass.

The well-known Egyptologist promises to present the details of his sensational research and the find itself at an exhibition in Madrid, which will take place in October. The Daughters of the Nile project is dedicated to female pharaohs.
