Nabiullina: the Central Bank of the Russian Federation is not engaged in unlimited "money printing"

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation closely monitors the process of issuing Russian currency, said the head of the regulator, Elvira Nabiullina, in response to a corresponding question from journalists.

“In the jargon of the Central Bank, “printing money” is the unlimited emission financing of the state or companies by the Central Bank. Such behavior inevitably leads to an increase in inflation (if you do not set limits for the growth of the money supply, prices will grow without limit). We do not deal with this,” Ms. Nabiullina emphasized during a press conference of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.

The head of the Central Bank also recalled that the monetary policy (MP) of the regulator is aimed at ensuring proportionality between the growth of the money supply and economic activity.

Since February 2023, the Central Bank has expanded the list of indicators that characterize the money supply in the Russian economy. In the report on monetary policy at the beginning of 2023, the regulator paid special attention to the indicators of the money supply, which the regulator is guided by in making decisions, including on the key rate.
