"Music in the Metro" announces a competition for the next season

The Moscow Metro has begun accepting applications for participation in the anniversary season of the Music in the Metro project. From September 20 to October 20, on the music.mosmetro.ru website, you can leave an application and participate in an open audition. The winners of the competition will have the opportunity to perform at venues in the capital's metro over the next year. The "creative" partner was the Moscow International House of Music.

As a reminder, the Music in the Metro project offers musicians who have passed the selection process to use special online tools to independently choose a convenient time and venue for performances from those that are adapted for concerts in the metro. Among the most famous, for example, are the intermediate lobbies of the Kitai-Gorod and Taganskaya metro stations on the Circle Line. .

“According to the instructions of Moscow Mayor S. Sobyanin, we are creating such conditions in public transport that passengers are not only comfortable, but also interested,” emphasizes Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for transport issues. According to him, the Music in the Metro project is a great opportunity for city musicians to perform in front of a large audience.

Ever since the Moscow metro became the main means of transport for the residents of the metropolis, the lobbies and underpasses of the subway have been a welcome venue for performances by novice musicians and just non-formals from the performing arts. However, concerts of this kind have been banned on the territory of the Moscow Metro since its opening.

And it’s understandable why: on transport of increased danger, it is simply risky to allow unorganized events to be held. True, the rules have always had a caveat: it is prohibited “without the written permission of the metro management.” In the 2010s, the metropolitan transport department came to the conclusion: it is possible not to prohibit, but to regulate the procedure for obtaining this very “permit”. To everyone's delight.

“I often receive videos shot in the Moscow metro,” says legendary conductor and violinist Vladimir Spivakov. “Sometimes they are funny, sometimes they are quite professional performances of the classics – it’s clear that students of music universities got on the subway…”. According to the maestro, it is important that all these musicians have listeners for whom such impromptu concerts are an opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle, stop for a while and think about what is really important, or just take a break.

– I wish the participants of the project good luck, – Spivakov added, – and I hope that the fifth season, which is supported by the Moscow International House of Music, will reveal the names of new metro stars!

For musicians, performances in the subway, as past seasons of the project have already shown, are not only an opportunity for "promotion", but also a serious school of stagecraft. There are no wings and stage equipment on the metro platform - only the simplest amplifying equipment. And the instant reaction of the public: people are standing, listening, or passing by. Everything is honest, according to the Hamburg account.

Famous musicians, including Polina Gagarina, Dmitry Malikov, Lolita, Igor Butman, Denis Maidanov and many others, tested the metropolitan "stage" on themselves. And when, during the coronavirus restrictions, performances within the project were temporarily interrupted, Muscovites really missed them: this is evident from the numerous appeals to Deptrans with a request to return Music in the Metro.

“A performance at the Music in the Metro site is not easy, it takes 4 hours, and not every artist can withstand this, it is necessary to build the program correctly,” says Vladimir Levkin, member of the casting jury for Music in the Metro. - We invite everyone who wants to declare themselves as an artist, show their talent to the general public in our anniversary, 5th season. Deptrans and the House of Music will provide such an opportunity to all those who have a need to show themselves, to play their music, and this is very cool.”
