The trade union of journalists and media workers was liquidated by decision of the Moscow City Court, the organization’s lawyer Maxim Krupsky told Kommersant. The activity of the trade union was suspended from July 4 due to a lawsuit filed by the prosecutor’s office.

The trade union of journalists and media workers was created in March 2016 after an attack on a bus with journalists and human rights activists on the border of Chechnya and Ingushetia (still not disclosed). In December 2017, the organization was officially registered by the Ministry of Justice, and it was also admitted to the International and European Federations of Journalists.

The Moscow prosecutor’s office in May began an unscheduled inspection of the trade union. In early June, the department filed a lawsuit with the Moscow City Court to liquidate the organization. Mr. Krupsky told Kommersant that the arguments for the new requirement of the supervisory authority took up 350 sheets. The trade union believes that the claims of the prosecutor’s office are caused by high-profile campaigns in support of journalists. In early August, the organization was fined 500 thousand rubles. for “discrediting” the Russian army.
