Medvedev reached the quarterfinals of the Masters in Indian Wells

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev won a strong-willed victory in the 1/8 final match over Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Andrei Rublev was defeated in two sets by Briton Cameron Norrie.

Russian Daniil Medvedev made it to the quarterfinals of the Masters in Indian Wells, and it was a match according to all the laws of real cinema. The match began with a tense “string” – both tennis players exchanged early breaks. Then the action flowed into a calmer channel, the outcome of the first set was decided only in a tie-break. And despite the fact that Medvedev was able to win back a triple set point at a score of 5:6, in the decisive, “13th game”, it was Zverev who took the initiative into his own hands and took the lead, eventually taking the first set.

During the break, Medvedev again burst into an angry tirade against the courts: “It’s a shame to play on this court. It should be banned from playing here. And they call it hard. What a shame to call this terrible court that way. I’ll go to the toilet, but I don’t care, give me a time violation, I’ll be as slow as this court. If we are allowed to play on such a court, then I can afford to do whatever I want. And after that, he also noted that he knows what he is talking about, since he considers himself a “specialist in hard coverage.”

This lyrical digression, however, did not cause either Zverev or Medvedev to lose concentration. The climax came in the second set, when, with the score 3:2 in favor of the Russian, the blue-green court decided to respond to Medvedev’s insults: Daniil slipped terribly and sprained his ankle. I even had to call a doctor on the court, who, nevertheless, noted that there was no danger of continuing to play. And Medvedev continued: the result of the set was again decided in a tie-break, but this time the first racket of Russia did not allow the German to impose his game. 7:6 – Medvedev.

In the third set of this match, which by that time had already become one of the best of the year, everything was moving towards a natural ending: Medvedev turned the tide of the meeting in the second set, made an early break in the third and felt calm on the pitch. However, the moment came to apply for the match, and Medvedev faltered. Zverev won back the match point and made a reverse break, triumphantly raising his hands to the sky to the stormy jubilation of the audience. However, this celebration did not last long, already in the next game Medvedev severely and inexorably realized the first chance for a break. Fortunately, the second time he managed to apply for the match and go to the next round.

Medvedev’s next opponent will be Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Andrey Rublev, in turn, did not support the fuse of his Russian colleague and, it seemed, went to the match insufficiently concentrated. The Briton made a break on 3 of Andrey’s 4 innings in the first set and finished the set 6-2 in his favor without any problems. In the second set, a similar trend continued, with Norrie again taking a 5-2 lead before serving for the match. All the spectators rooting for Rublev felt a glimmer of hope when he played a match point on the opponent’s serve, took someone else’s serve, and then his own. However, with the score 5:4, Norrie did not leave a single chance for Andrey at the reception. Final score 6:2; 6:4 in favor of the British.

Thus, Daniil Medvedev remained the only representative of Russia at the tournament in Indian Wells.
