Medvedev lost in the final of the “Masters” in Indian Wells

The Russian lost for the first time in 20 matches. Carlos Alcaraz returned to the first line of the ranking.

The first racket of Russia Daniil Medvedev lost to the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the tournament of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in Indian Wells with a score of 3:6, 2:6.

Medvedev and Alcaraz reached the final of Indian Wells for the first time in their careers, the first “thousander” of the season. Daniil traditionally performs well at American tournaments in the fall, but Medvedev often has problems in the spring. Alcaraz, on the other hand, had a great run at the Solar Double tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami last year. Therefore, despite the experience of Medvedev, it was the young Spaniard who was considered the favorite of this confrontation.

Unfortunately for the Russian fans, Alcaraz fully justified the status of the favorite. Having seized the initiative from the very beginning of the match, he did not give it away until the very end. Medvedev could not earn a single break point on the Spaniard’s serve – he even reached the “exact” score only once, and then in the last game.

This loss ended Medvedev’s winning streak of 19 matches. Prior to that, the Russian became the winner of three tournaments in a row – in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai.

Although Danya lost the most important match, the tournament is by no means a failure. Medvedev overcame many serious obstacles on his way to the final: in the fourth round match with Sasha Zverev, he twisted his leg painfully, but was able to turn the tide of the game. In the quarter-finals with Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, there was another mini-injury to the thumb during a fall with a racket. The semi-final with Francis Tiafoe tested Danya’s strength after he missed as many as seven match points.

At the traditional awards ceremony on the court, Daniil shone as usual. “I never spoke before, but I have a very toxic relationship with the courts here – a lot of love and hate, all sorts of unpleasant moments. But I would like to thank the court,” Medvedev said to the laughter of the stadium. – Here I played only on this court (#1 – author’s note), so I would like to thank him too. You know, I complained about him, but he also gave me inconvenience – I sprained my leg, injured my finger. But he gave me a chance to reach the end of the tournament. So thanks to this court. I will definitely be back”.

The next ATP tournament, also of the Masters series, will be held in Miami from March 23 to April 2.
