Luxembourg PM says gas price ceiling could leave EU without energy

In Prague, an informal EU summit is taking place, at which representatives of states discussed the risks that Europe may face by imposing sanctions against Russia. Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel expressed concern about the possible introduction by the EU of a ceiling on prices for Russian energy resources. In his opinion, such measures can completely deprive Europe of energy.

“Perhaps we will have a price ceiling, but there will be no energy. It must be understood that we are not the only consumer of energy in the world, so we must be very careful in making decisions, the consequences can be problematic,” Mr. Bettel said, speaking at the summit (quoted from "RIA News").

Before the start of the first summit of the European Political Community (EPC), which was also held in Prague, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas expressed her positive attitude towards the introduction of the eighth package of sanctions against Russia, but noted that the union “left fewer and fewer tools at its disposal.” ".

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in a video message recorded during an informal EU summit, named Brussels' sanctions policy is "erroneous". The eighth package of sanctions was also criticized by Cyprus, Greece and Malta, whose tankers carry most of the Russian oil to the EU.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in September suggested introduce a ceiling on Russian gas prices. In the eighth package of sanctions against Russia approved by the European Union on October 6 prohibited transportation of Russian oil to third countries at a price higher than the established one. However, restrictions on gas were not included in it.

During the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin declaredthat in the event that Western countries decide to limit the prices of Russian energy carriers, Russia will stop any supplies.
