Liz Truss came into conflict with King Charles III

The new Prime Minister of Great Britain Liz Truss came into conflict with King Charles III, writes The Sunday Times.

As reported in the material, the controversy arose due to participation in the UN conference on climate change COP27, which will be held next month in Egypt. At the same time, King Charles, known for his interest in environmental issues, intended to make a speech at the event.

However, following a personal meeting between Truss and the monarch at Buckingham Palace last month, it was announced that Charles III would not attend the event, despite the invitation of the organizers. The author of the article notes that the convictions of Charles III as an environmentalist do not quite correspond to the intentions of the Truss government to limit the UK's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 or completely abandon them.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the king would not be attending the summit, stressing that the decision was taken in consultation "without any disagreement" and there was no reason to talk about a conflict. The statement said that the participation of members of the royal family in such events depends on the position of the British Foreign Office.

At the same time, according to a source close to the king, Charles III "will be disappointed" if he does not go to the event. The publication cites the opinion of a source from the monarch's entourage, who said that even the impossibility of a physical presence does not mean that Charles III will not find an opportunity to take part in the UN conference, and various options are being discussed. In addition, meetings were reportedly scheduled at the conference for the king as part of his work to attract investment in environmentally friendly initiatives.

A source for The Sunday Times criticized the Truss government's decision to ban the king from attending the event, and expressed his belief that he "absolutely could deliver the message of the UK government and give it credibility." As noted in the article, in the royal speech at the opening of Parliament, Charles III voiced several theses that ran counter to his beliefs before accession to the throne. “It is disappointing that someone does not believe that the king can do this,” a source said.

The article also notes that the monarch already has experience of speaking at the UN conference on climate change, in particular, he spoke in 2015. The authors of the article believe that such a contradiction means a difficult start in the relationship between the Truss Cabinet and Charles III.
