Lavrov: Russia is in favor of expanding the UN Security Council at the expense of other countries

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is in favor of expanding the composition of the UN Security Council.

“We see prospects for democratizing the work of the Security Council solely through the expansion of the representation of the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America,” he said, speaking at a meeting of the UN General Assembly. In particular, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted India and Brazil as "key international players and worthy candidates for permanent membership in the Council."

Both the Council and the UN as a whole, of course, must be adapted to modern realities, Lavrov stressed.

The UN Security Council is a permanent body of the United Nations, which, in accordance with Article 24 of the UN Charter, is entrusted with the main responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

The Council consists of 15 member states - 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent, elected by the UN General Assembly. The permanent members are Russia, USA, China, Great Britain and France.
