Large-scale protests in Iran lead to human casualties

Protests are growing in Iran, which have already led to human casualties, Reuters reported on September 22, citing official data. In just the past five days of protests, eight people have been reportedly killed, including a police officer and a member of the pro-government Basij militia. According to the Kurdish human rights agency Hengav, 10 people died.

The largest street protests since the 2019 protests took place in more than 50 Iranian cities, although the core of the protests was initially the northwestern regions of the country, populated mainly by Kurds. The reason was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who arrived in Tehran from Iranian Kurdistan. On September 13, she was arrested by the vice police for "wrong wearing the hijab" and taken to the police station. According to the authorities, the girl had a heart attack and a stroke in the police station. Amini was taken to the hospital, where she died on 16 September. Relatives of the deceased are sure that the detainee was killed in the police station. According to their version, as a result of the beatings, Amini received a fracture of the base of her skull and died.
