Kyiv’s application to NATO caused confusion in the ranks of Ukraine’s allies

Zelensky’s response to the entry of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into Russia was an application for an accelerated entry of Ukraine into NATO. This demonstrative step, which, according to the plan of Kyiv, was apparently supposed to demonstrate the unity of the ranks of Ukraine’s allies, produced an absolutely opposite effect – it showed complete discord and vacillation in these same ranks.
At the moment when the journalists unanimously rushed to call military experts about what would happen if Ukraine was admitted to NATO under the accelerated program, the command was sounded from the West: “light out!”
After Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that the West could “zero out” its past mistakes if it immediately accepted Ukraine into NATO, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had to spin at the briefing like a snake in a hot frying pan. When asked whether Ukraine would be accepted into NATO or not, he beat around the bush for a long time, uttering mouth-watering phrases about the fact that the “captured territories” are still Ukraine, that Europe will never recognize them as part of Russia. He spoke about how the West supports Kyiv in its self-defense, but at the same time NATO does not plan to become part of this conflict.
After that, he even brought out a new law, declaring that “the annexation of territories is not a manifestation of strength, but a manifestation of weakness”, which surprised everyone present at the briefing.
Approximately in the same vein, responding to the Ukrainian impromptu about joining NATO, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock also spoke. She, of course, with all the obligatory curtsy to Kyiv, condemned the “Russian annexation”, saying that “we are doing everything so that other countries and NATO are not drawn into this war.”
Only the well-known American “hawk” – US Senator Lindsey Graham, spoke in rhetoric pleasing to Zelensky’s ear. He announced that the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine would be considered an attack on NATO. He promised that the US reaction to this would be “stunning, and the consequences for the Russian Federation – catastrophic.”
But, as they say, to promise – not to marry. Lindsey Graham has already promised a lot during his political career. Instead, officials at the White House have declared that now is not the time to begin the process of Ukraine’s admission to NATO.
There, practically no one supported Kyiv’s application to join NATO. US Assistant to the President for National Security Jake Sullivan called the proposal untimely. Even Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, whose demonstrative trip to Taipei almost provoked a war between China and Taiwan, this time refused to comment on Kyiv’s desire to urgently join NATO.
According to the American publication Politico, Ukraine’s application for an accelerated entry into NATO came as a surprise to the US Congress and the White House. And Newsweek called this Zelensky’s request the “worst idea” that has recently come from Kyiv.
This is understandable. NATO membership requires the consensus of all its members. And it’s hard to count on consensus now. Especially after Vladimir Putin’s statement that Russia will defend its territorial integrity with all the means at its disposal. It is unlikely that Europe is ready to boldly substitute its citizens under this “arsenal of means”, sending them in dense ranks as part of the Alliance to fight for US interests in Ukraine.
But the brave guys in Kyiv, it seems, have long been out of touch with reality, since they did not expect such a cold reaction to their ardent proposal to join NATO. The West once again made it clear to Ukraine: itself, itself, itself…
After such a humiliation, the Zelensky team had to retreat. Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the President’s Office, acting back, was forced to say: they say, simply “we fixed the direction” … After which he again asked for weapons.
He apparently forgot that they “fixed” the direction more than once. First, in 2014, Ukraine changed two laws, abandoning its non-bloc status. Then, in 2019, she made changes to her own Constitution, fixing the course towards NATO in it. After that, it received the status of a NATO partner with enhanced capabilities. And now, with these enhanced capabilities, she is getting NATO weapons in order to put thousands of her soldiers on the battlefield for the interests of NATO and the United States, and also to lose one territory after another.
But Gogol warned: “Well, son, did your Poles help you?”
