AFK Sistema is negotiating the purchase of a Volkswagen plant in Kaluga. About it informed Kommersant, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, they plan to restart the site, while maintaining the production of Volkswagen models and cars close to them. The Kazakh automaker Allur (the group owns the production sites Agromashholding and SaryarkaAvtoProm, as well as the dealer and distribution network AllurAuto) can be involved in this.

This information was not commented on in Sistema and Allur. At the same time, the Russian Volkswagen group called the scenario with the sale of the plant in Kaluga to a third party possible, “nevertheless, no decision has been made on this matter,” the company stressed.

According to the newspaper’s sources, the deal to buy a plant in Kaluga will allow Sistema to create a machine-building holding. Now the company does not yet have such assets.

The fact that Volkswagen wants to sell its plant in Kaluga, Vedomosti wrote at the end of July 2022. Then it was reported that Asia Auto from Kazakhstan could become a potential buyer of the asset, since it has a license to produce Volkswagen and Skoda cars.

The Volkswagen site in Kaluga began operating in 2007; since 2009, the plant has been operating in full cycle. The capacity of the enterprise is about 225,000 vehicles per year, including Volkswagen Polo, Tiguan, and Skoda Rapid models. Some 118,000 vehicles were assembled in 2021 and the plant has been idle since March 2022, although according to the newspaper, Volkswagen has already attempted to restart production with components from Turkey, but the headquarters of European automakers have prohibited the use of such scheme, so the plant did not restart.

Also in Kaluga, Volkswagen has a plant of the company’s engines (capacity – 150,000 units per year). Volkswagen Taos. This plant has also been idle since March 2022, and in July Volkswagen decided to end contract assembly in Nizhny Novgorod.
