Irreconcilable to the public manifestation of loyalty towards sexual minorities, local citizens mistakenly “punished” the Brazilian by mistaking the flag of one of the provinces of this country for the “rainbow” of LGBT people. The MK correspondent tried to find out who else could be threatened by such erroneous reprisals.

The victim of such intolerant Qataris was a Brazilian journalist. After the end of the match, he left the Lusail stadium, holding the flag of one of the states of Brazil – Pernambuco. This cloth, officially legalized by the local authorities of Pernambuco, depicts, among other things, a stylized star, sun and rainbow. It was this last element that caused the displeasure of one of the natives who found themselves in the way of the Brazilian.

“A guy in a traditional white dress came up to me, grabbed the flag, threw it on the ground and began to stomp,” Reuters quoted the journalist as saying.

The police officers who appeared after that at the scene of the conflict did not at all begin to apply any harsh measures to their compatriot. The thing is that both the instigator of the incident and law enforcement officers mistook the flag of the Brazilian province for a cloth, which is now a well-known symbol of sexual minorities.

The Brazilian journalist was able to film what was happening on his phone and upload the “movie” to one of the social networks. This video caused a great stir among users.

Can representatives of some other countries suffer from similar mistakes of the Qatari “fighters for moral values”?

As you know, the Russian team was suspended from participation in the current football championship by a voluntaristic decision of Western sports functionaries. The fact for the fans of Valery Karpin’s team is certainly sad, offensive, but perhaps it was thanks to such a suspension that one of our compatriots escaped trouble in Qatar.

Specifically, under the threat of accusations of promoting non-traditional sexual relations and the corresponding decisive actions of the Qataris, residents of the Jewish Autonomous Region, as well as some villages in the Moscow and Vladimir regions, in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug could be.

After all, there is a rainbow on the officially approved flags.

“The flag of the Jewish Autonomous Region is a white rectangular panel, on the horizontal axis of which there is a colored stripe symbolizing the rainbow, and consisting of seven narrow horizontal stripes:…”

And in the Vladimir region, there is now a closed administrative-territorial formation of the city of Raduzhny (former Vladimir-30). The flag of this previously secret settlement depicts a fragment of a rainbow-arc and two green trees. So if one of the townspeople came to the World Cup in Qatar and decided to demonstrate their sympathy for their native city there, waving its flag … It would turn out to be a scandal no worse than the current one – with a Brazilian citizen.

Raduzhny has its own settlement in the capital region. This is a village in the urban district of Kolomna. It is easy to guess that the official symbol – the flag of this municipality, contains an element corresponding to the name. From the description of the flag: “A rectangular white cloth… bearing a vertical blue stripe in the middle…; on the ascending diagonal, the cloth is covered by a rainbow, reproduced as a curved composite strip (of five equal-width longitudinal narrow strips) … “

A city with exactly the same name exists in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The flag of the northerners is more intricate. Three stylized plagues are depicted there, and a cedar with a capercaillie sitting on it … And closer to the staff “there are 6 equal stripes – white, purple, blue, green, yellow-golden, red.” That is, the same rainbow, which is not unambiguously perceived by everyone, is depicted.

The residents of some foreign cities would not have escaped the potential threat from the actions of the Qataris. Among them, for example, the inhabitants of the ancient Peruvian Cusco. The local authorities approved the city flag in the form of a seven-striped rainbow cloth more than 40 years ago. The researchers put forward a version that it was precisely such symbolism that the powerful Inca empire used in ancient times. I wonder if the Qataris know about this?

There is another territorial entity in Peru with a “dangerous” “rainbow” flag – the Apurimac region. True, in fairness, it should be noted that there seven multi-colored stripes do not correspond to the sequence of the rainbow, and some of the colors also differ from the standard color layout for a given atmospheric phenomenon.

The Peruvian team did not make it to the current championship. Therefore, the inhabitants of Qatar will certainly not be excited by the sight of the “Kuskovo” or “Apurimak” flags that are provocative for them.

In the same way, this time the players of the Republic of South Africa could not overcome the qualifying stage of the World Cup. But the flag of this country may also seem suspicious to some of the not very attentive fighters against LGBT people. It is not for nothing that it is unofficially called the “Rainbow flag” – “rainbow flag”. And although the geometry and alternation of color areas on the cloth does not have a clear resemblance to the rainbow, but it is so motley among South Africans! One of the most colorful flags among all countries in the world. Here, it is not surprising for some Qatari who is not too well versed in world heraldry to get confused, to suspect a dirty trick … With all the ensuing consequences.

But who really should take into account the current unfortunate experience of the Brazilian journalist is those American football fans who came to Qatar to cheer for the US team from Santa Cruz County, located in western California. The flag of their territory legalized the image, including five horizontal stripes, copied from the coloring of the rainbow (only the blue and purple parts of it are not here). It’s better for these guys to arm themselves with a classic star-striped cloth to express patriotic feelings – they will be more whole!
