Iran demands 10-match ban for US World Cup team for insulting the flag

The Iranian Football Federation has filed a complaint with the ethics committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA). Iran has accused the US team of disrespecting its flag and is demanding a 10-game suspension for the World Cup, reports The Guardian.

The US Football Federation refused to publish the image of the official flag of Iran on social networks, thus deciding to support the protests in Iran. Instead, an image of the flag was published, which lacked the emblem of Iran, which is considered the official state symbol. Iranian authorities have criticized the United States, accusing them of “removing the symbol of Allah.”

“According to FIFA rules, a person or group of persons who offend the dignity or integrity of the country is subject to a suspension of at least ten matches or another period or other disciplinary action,” the Iranian Football Federation said.

FIFA declined to comment on the complaint. Sources at The Gurdian believe that any disciplinary action against the US team is “highly unlikely.”

The US team at the 2022 World Cup with two points is in 3rd place in the Group B standings. Iran is in 2nd place with three points. The match between the two teams will take place tomorrow, November 29.
