Initiative citizens advocate equalizing the retirement ages of men and women
In most countries of the world this rule has been in effect for a long time
Activists on the Russian Public Initiative portal proposed equalizing the retirement age for both sexes. In their opinion, it should be 65 years.
Currently, the retirement age in our country is 58 years for women and 63 years for men. It is planned that by 2028 women will retire at 60 years old, men at 65 years old.
The authors of the initiative believe that this state of affairs is a direct violation of one of the constitutional principles, namely that men and women in Russia have equal rights and freedoms, and equal opportunities for their implementation.
In order to implement this provision of the Constitution, in December 2022, the government approved the National Action Strategy for Women for 2023-2030. It was developed to form a system of measures aimed at increasing the economic independence of women, their political activity, and expanding the opportunities for women’s self-realization. Another important goal of the strategy is to overcome stereotypical ideas about the social roles of men and women. Its implementation, according to the developers of the initiative, will make it possible to defeat such a shameful social phenomenon as sexism at the legislative level. Women, they note, are no worse than men, and vice versa. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure in practice the equality declared by the Constitution.
One of the steps to solving the problem is to equalize the retirement age of men and women. This will ensure equal economic opportunities for representatives of both sexes and prevent a decline in the standard of living of women who, at the peak of their working activity, are forced to abandon self-realization in their chosen profession.
In accordance with the decree of the President of Russia, a federal-level initiative posted on the portal is considered adopted if it receives 100 thousand votes in a year. Accepted initiatives are sent for consideration to a special expert commission, and if approved, to the relevant state or municipal authority.

In many countries around the world, the retirement age for men and women is already the same. Typically it ranges between 60 and 70 years. For example, in Algeria, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and South Korea it is 60 years. in Armenia, Morocco, Singapore, Slovakia - 63 years. At the age of 67, men and women in Australia, Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Italy begin to receive pensions. The highest retirement age is in Libya, 70 years.
As for countries in which, like ours, women retire earlier than men, there are also many of them. This is most typical for the countries of the former socialist camp and states that appeared on the world map after its collapse. For example, in North Korea, women retire earlier than South Koreans - at 55; North Korean men also have to work until they are 60, just like South Koreans, to receive a pension. The smallest difference between female and male retirement ages is in Costa Rica (two years, 61 years 10 months for men and 59 years 10 months for women), in Azerbaijan, Montenegro and Switzerland (in all three countries - a year, 65 years and 64 years), in Lithuania (4 months, 64 years 8 months for men and 64 and 4 months for women). The five-year difference rule in force in Russia is the most common difference in female and male retirement ages.
