The policy of “open doors” in the NATO alliance is supported by Washington, said US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv was counting on an accelerated entry into NATO, and filed a corresponding application.

Greenfield noted that Washington will continue to support Ukraine in “defending itself,” but each country will consider the possibility of granting NATO membership to Kyiv on its own.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock spoke even more reservedly on the issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO. She noted that Berlin is trying to prevent other countries from being drawn into the conflict, although it supports Ukraine, including with heavy weapons.

Earlier, the White House said that “now is not the time” for the process of Ukraine’s admission to NATO. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said that at present the goal is only to help Ukraine.
