The mass death of animals and birds, including those listed in the Red Book, became known from social networks in early November. People wrote that in the fields in several districts of the region they found the corpses of dead hares and birds, which usually fly over this territory for the winter. The Ministry of Natural Resources of the Stavropol Territory confirmed that in the hunting grounds on the territory of Aleksandrovsky, Novoselitsky, Petrovsky, Trunovsky, Izobilnensky, Krasnogvardeisky, Andropovsky, Novoaleksandrovsky districts, a massive death of animals was recorded: hare, gulls and common cranes.
The largest number of dead Red Book birds (106 individuals) was found on the shore of a pond a few kilometers from the village of Donskaya Balka. Their remains were sent to the Stavropol regional veterinary laboratory for testing for avian influenza and Newcastle disease.
However, according to the regional Ministry of Natural Resources, zinc phosphide, a poison designed to control rodents, was found in samples of dead animals. The ministry also said that information on all cases of death and the results of research was sent to the police and the prosecutor’s office “to assist in establishing the causes of death of animals and those responsible for this.” At present considered on initiation of criminal cases.
Governor of the Stavropol Territory, in turn, declaredthat the Ministry of Agriculture and the territory where the incident with the birds took place “should find the person who decided that he could violate agricultural technologies with impunity, at random. No, he can not. The violator must be identified and punished according to the law.”
This is not the first case of mass death of birds listed in the Red Book in the Stavropol Territory. In December 2017, 230 dead birds were found in the area of Lake Solenoye in the Aleksandrovsky district.
As a result of a chemical-toxicological study, metabolites of bromine-containing rodenticides were found in birds, which led to their death. In the course of the investigation, which was conducted on the fact of the death of birds, it was found that just at that time on the lands around the lake, activities were carried out to persecute rodents. The poison was simply scattered over the surface of the soil. The case was investigated under the article “violation of the rules established for the fight against diseases and pests of plants, which, through negligence, entailed grave consequences” (part 2 of article 249 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). However, whether the culprit of the mass death of birds has been found is not known.
