In Nizhny Novgorod, access to the place of death of journalist Irina Slavina was limited
The administration of the Nizhny Novgorod district of Nizhny Novgorod today, October 2, limited access to the sculptural composition “On Guard of the Law” near the building of the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. On this day four years ago, Nizhny Novgorod journalist Irina Slavina committed suicide near a sculpture group. Since then, Nizhny Novgorod residents have come to the memorial in early October to honor the memory of the journalist.
In October 2024, the sculpture group and part of the adjacent sidewalk were surrounded by metal fences with warning tape. Behind the fence, workers are dismantling paving slabs.
The district administration explained that local subsidence of the tiles was identified in this part, so a decision was made to carry out repairs. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
As Kommersant-Privolzhye wrote, in 2020, Irina Slavina and several city activists were searched as part of a criminal investigation against local businessman Mikhail Iosilevich.
Nizhny Novgorod human rights activists believe that Irina Slavina was subjected to pressure from security forces. In her suicide note, she wrote: “I ask you to blame the Russian Federation for my death.” Attempts by human rights activists to initiate a criminal case on incitement to suicide were unsuccessful. The Investigative Committee of Russia called their arguments far-fetched.
