The head of the Savings Bank of Russia, German Gref, called the share of small and medium-sized businesses in the country’s total GDP, which is 20%, “shameful” and “bewitched”. In his opinion, Russian entrepreneurs should work more actively to change the situation.

“A share of 20% of GDP is a shameful share, it seems to me. I would like to suggest small and medium business corporations to be a little more active. Take the initiative,” he said during the forum of the public organization “Opora Rossii” (quoted from RBC).

According to him, in China the share of small and medium-sized businesses in the gross domestic product is 60-70%, in the US and Finland – about 60%, in Italy – more than 70%. In Russia, Mr. Gref emphasized, over the past four years the share of small and medium-sized enterprises has invariably remained at the “enchanted” level of 20%.

Earlier, Rosstat reported that the share of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia’s GDP in 2021 was 20.3%. Detailed data on the structure of the country’s GDP for 2022 has not yet been published. According to the plans of the Russian government, by the end of 2024, the share of small and medium-sized businesses in the GDP of the Russian Federation should be 32.5% – this is provided for by the national project “Small and Medium Business”.
