Bloomberg reported that the head of the office of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Gergely Gulyash, during a conversation with reporters, announced that the ICC warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin was not binding on Hungarian territory.
“Hungary has not recognized the official status of that part of the ICC statute that would allow such an arrest warrant to be binding,” the agency quoted a statement from a representative of the Hungarian prime minister’s office. Otherwise, as Gergeli Gulyash pointed out, the country’s constitution would be violated.
However, Bloomberg, commenting on the situation, expresses the opinion that since Hungary signed the Rome Statute of the ICC in 1999 and ratified it in 2001, it generally recognizes its jurisdiction. The extent to which the assessment of the agency is justified from a legal point of view remains an open question.
