Hungarian Foreign Ministry: we are not ready to discuss sanctions in the energy sector and we are not alone in this

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest is not ready to discuss new sanctions against Russian energy carriers. According to him, there are other states in the European Union that do not want this, but they are influenced by the “liberal mainstream” and “do not dare to act in their own interests.”

“I would like to make it clear that Hungary is not even ready to discuss any further energy sanctions, neither gas nor oil. And I would like to say that we are not alone in this. Maybe it seems so, but this is precisely the factor of political stability and political courage, but unfortunately this is not given to others, ”said Mr. Szijjarto at the Transit forum in the city of Tihany (quoted from “RIA News”).

The minister believes that Hungary can become a “local exception” in a recession in Europe. In his opinion, this is due to the fact that Budapest is the “world champion” in managing economic crises, the country will have the energy necessary for the normal operation of the economy, Hungary has its own foreign policy and political stability.

Hungary has supported several packages of sanctions against Russia in response to the military operation in Ukraine. However, the country blocked the EU oil embargo for several weeks and secured a number of exceptions for itself. In addition, now Hungary does not support the discussed visa restrictions for Russians.
