How often women are subjected to violence – Mir – Kommersant

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The UN General Assembly established it in memory of the Mirabal sisters, activists from the Dominican Republic who were beaten to death by members of the secret police of dictator Rafael Trujillo. By estimated World Health Organization, one in three women in the world experience physical or sexual violence.

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the women most often affected by violence are women from Pakistan, Guinea, Senegal, Benin and Yemen.

Canadians are the least likely to encounter aggression. Just under 2% of women there said that an intimate partner had physically or sexually abused them at least once in their lives.

In 2019, sociologists from the OECD also asked women in different countries whether husbands and partners have the right to use violence against them under certain circumstances. Zero tolerance for force showed in just two countries, Malta and Denmark. And women in many African countries found violence acceptable.

By estimated UN, women die from domestic violence every 11 minutes – about 47 thousand deaths a year. During the pandemic, 7 out of 10 women in the world experienced physical abuse and heard verbal abuse more often than usual.

In Russia, 23.3% of women believe that a man has the right to use violence in a given situation. Fortunately, in practice, Russian women experience domestic violence less often – approximately 19.6% of the country’s residents said that they had suffered from violence at least once in their lives. A consortium of women’s NGOs has estimated that 2,680 Russian women died from domestic violence in 2020 and 2021.
