The legendary exploration worker will reveal the secrets of the most romantic profession

Geophysics of oil and gas, subsoil use, gemology (the science of gems), economics of the mineral resource complex – all these specializations belong to the profession of a geologist, it is not for nothing that today it is one of the most popular. And on October 8, this inexhaustible, like bowels, science, linking the past and the future, will slightly open the door to its holy of holies – a university where they teach geologists.

The Russian State Geological Prospecting University named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze is abbreviated in the old fashioned way as MGRI (Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute), this university is so legendary not only for the capital, but for the whole country. Over its century-old history, it has trained many highly qualified practitioners in an area that is extremely important for a country with the richest resources – and has never dropped the Alma Mater bar of the most romantic professionals, fearlessly leaving for dreams and fogs.

The romantic flair does not prevent the university from keeping pace with the times, expanding its curricula with all the most modern and popular specialties such as mine surveying, geo-IT and others that meet the requirements of progress. What are these requirements, as well as much more, will be personally told to applicants and their parents by the teachers and the leadership of the Moscow State Institute of Natural Resources at the Open Day on October 8.

As part of the event, a wide workshop will be held – master classes, during which everyone will be able to try on the role of a modern hydrogeologist, ecologist and other trends within the profession that are fashionable today. And if something is to your liking and within your strength, you can immediately get all the necessary information about admission.

“It is important for each applicant to understand what practical skills it is possible to acquire at our university,” notes Yury Panov, Acting Rector of the Moscow State Institute of Natural Resources.

Still, if these are such fascinating and promising areas as, for example, paleontology or mineralogy, and specialized state corporations snap up MGRI graduates like hot cakes.

Their deans will tell about the faculties of the university, there are six faculties in total: geological exploration, exploration and development technologies, geology and geophysics of oil and gas, hydrogeological, environmental, economics and management. MGRI also has a branch – in Stary Oskol (SOF MGRI, formerly the Geological Exploration College), no less honored than its older brother – the Stary Oskol educational institution has 85 years of work behind it and the status of the leading educational institution in the Belgorod region for the training of highly qualified specialists for industrial sectors of the country.

Preparing for future achievements, MGRI students annually undergo training practices not only at university training grounds in the Crimea and Sergiev Posad, but also on the “ground” – at the leading enterprises of the mineral resource complex of Russia.

On the day when access to the bowels of the profession will be open to everyone, guests are promised to be shown the unique intra-university museums – Mineralogical and Paleontological. And also “let you feel the unique student atmosphere of the MSRI”. How exactly? Come and find out for yourself.
