High school graduates are more likely to choose to study at colleges than at universities

The Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration has published a monitoring that assesses what proportion of school graduates enter higher education institutions after receiving a certificate of secondary education.

college admissions

As the authors of the study noted, the number of graduates entering universities immediately after the 11th grade is declining. This may be due to the fact that the goal of obtaining higher education, which gave both social status and, accordingly, privileges when applying for a job, has become a thing of the past and is less and less associated with the current Russian sociality. In other words, the school-university model is giving way to another school-college model. And only then can there be a university.

As the authors of the monitoring note, there may be several reasons for changing “priorities”: firstly, the desire to quickly get a specialty in hand and, as a result, start working and earning faster. Secondly, the lack of priorities for employers when hiring university graduates. Moreover, they prefer to hire graduates of secondary vocational educational organizations who already have practical work experience. Thirdly, the growing popularity of secondary vocational education among young people. Fourth, rather high wages in the industrial sector. One way or another, only in 11 regions of Russia over the past five years has a fairly high percentage of school graduates who enter universities. In the rest, this percentage decreases every year.

According to the results of the last academic year, almost 60% of ninth grade graduates went to secondary vocational education, the share of eleventh graders here was 30%. Among the areas of training most demanded by applicants are nursing, information systems and programming, specialties of cooks, confectioners, as well as maintenance and repair of engines, systems and vehicle components.
