Guterres expressed concern over the holding of referendums in Donbass

The situation with referendums in the Donbass, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions is worrying. This was stated by UN Secretary General António Guterres.

“I am deeply concerned about reports of plans to organize so-called referendums in the territories of Ukraine, which are currently not under the control of the authorities,” he said (quote according to TASS).

From September 23 to 27, referendums on joining Russia will be held in the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as in the Kherson region and part of Zaporozhye. In the Zaporozhye region clarifiedthat the first voting results will be made public in the region on 28 September.

The Public Chambers of the LPR and the DPR turned to the heads of the republics Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin on September 19 with a request to hold referendums on joining the Russian Federation. After that, Pushilin suggested that Pasechnik synchronize the actions of the authorities of the two republics.

On September 20, with a similar request, the public council of the Kherson region turned to the head of the pro-Russian CAA Volodymyr Saldo, as well as members of the “We are with Russia” movement to the head of the CAA of the Zaporozhye region Yevgeny Balitsky. Later, the holding of referendums was approved.

The next day, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the citizens of Russia, as well as the residents of Donbass and territories controlled by the Russian Federation. He supported holding referendums and stated that Russia would do everything possible to ensure security in the territories where the vote would take place.
