The Pros and Cons of a Big Classic Rock Concert Show

The promise of the Kino participants to turn the year of the 60th anniversary of Viktor Tsoi into a long marathon of concerts and other special events was not at all empty. This is probably the first time the band’s hits are presented on such a large scale and in such a variety of ways. The other day in Moscow, the show “Symphonic Cinema” thundered, where the classics of the group sound in rich orchestral arrangements. “ZD” transmits from the scene.

How it looked

Yuri Kasparyan in a frock coat and with a guitar, Viktor Savich with a bass guitar, Oleg Shuntsov with a drum kit, an orchestra of forty-five musicians led by conductor Anton Shaburov, a big screen. Not a single word is spoken during the concert. Apparently, the human voice is recognized as a factor capable of disrupting the fusion of music and video art.

The power of the orchestra, of course, is designed to fascinate, which happens right from the “Blood Type”, which opens the show. The Symphonic Cinema orchestrated by Igor Vdovin was shown for the first time twelve years ago as a one-time event, but the resonance around the event inspired the main characters to go on tour, which continues to this day. The concert itself is replenished with new numbers from the Kino repertoire, and now it has also sparkled with spectacular video art from the son of the rock legend Alexander Tsoi.

Unlike the rock show of the new Kino, the symphony concert does not have Tsoi’s voice, and not all orchestral versions are recognizable from the first sounds. Probably, the audience sometimes felt like participants in the Guess the Song quest, and perhaps someone didn’t recognize something, but the fusion of orchestral power and sentimental Tsoi melodies was already the main hit of the action.

The guitarist, bassist and drummer blend perfectly with the orchestra, but sometimes the rock band and the academic staff seem to cede the main role to each other. Some versions sound rock and roll hard, but there are also those where the orchestra seems to get carte blanche and the audience has the opportunity to hear all the richness of strings and wind instruments. Such a change of approaches is great, and the audience does not have the slightest chance to get bored.

In some cases, something happens that is completely uncharacteristic of symphony concerts. On “Pack of Cigarettes” numerous lights appear in the hall, on “Aluminum Cucumbers” people begin to sing, and there are many such moments. In the second half of the action, many get up from their seats, and the encore with the final “Star Called the Sun” already resembles a real fan frenzy.

pros

Such a concert can be called a good way to start your familiarization with symphonic music. It would be naive to believe that only a few steps separate you from the Symphonic Cinema to going to the Philharmonic. However, the efforts of all participants in this undertaking, of course, can be classified as a session of expanding musical horizons.

Minuses

The graphics for each number became a full-fledged participant in the action and in most cases quite accurately fell into the music. Nevertheless, rock (and sometimes it came to the fore) is still associated with musicians’ big emotional plans. There were none, and from time to time they were very lacking.

Party Phrase

“I never thought that I would be cut to the orchestra,” the breathless girl, not quite student age, told her friend. She was clearly one of those who did not sit still that evening.
