GLONASS will create a navigation system for the Northern Sea Route

GLONASS wants to develop a local navigation system to provide communications on the Northern Sea Route (NSR). This was announced by the chief designer of the company Mikhail Korablev. According to him, the creation of the system will help solve the problem of navigation support for the entire Arctic zone, “which needs this service.”

“It is planned to create a local navigation system, including one that does not depend on satellite navigation, in the region of the Gulf of Ob. In the future, it is planned to replicate (systems.— “b”) to the entire Northern Sea Route,” said the chief designer of GLONASS at the plenary session of the Northern Forum, which started in Yakutsk (TASS quote).

In October from the Plesetsk cosmodrome was launched navigation satellite “Glonass-K”. GLONASS General Designer Sergey Karutin spokethat the new Glonass-K2 spacecraft will provide navigation accuracy of less than 30 cm. In addition, Roskosmos CEO Yuri Borisov said that Russian radar satellites will appear in 2023, which will provide information about the ice situation on the NSR.
