The German authorities want to transfer not only Leopard 2 tanks, but also older Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports.

It is noted that Rheinmetall AG and FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft mbH intend to return the old Leopards to service. So Rheinmetall AG stated that theoretically they could prepare 88 Leopard 1 tanks for transfer.

At the same time, the final decision on the Leopard 1 has not yet been made. The main stumbling block is the lack of shells for these tanks. Brazil has them, which has these tanks in service, but the country’s authorities refused Berlin’s request for re-export.

The Leopard 1 tank was produced from 1965 to 1984. In Germany, he was in service until 2010.

Earlier, Berlin announced its intention to transfer 14 more modern Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv.
