Francesco Bagnaia wins his fourth GP in a row and closes in on Fabio Quartararo, only fifth

Fabio Quartararo’s Championship lead continued to dwindle under the Misano sun. The fault is not with climate change but with a Francesco Bagnaia on a cloud. Winner of his fourth Grand Prix in a row, the Ducati rider is 30 points behind Quartararo. In two and a half months since the German Grand Prix, the Ducati rider has just taken 61 points from the Frenchman!
Eighth on the grid, the Championship leader had retained his rank at the end of a first lap which saw his compatriot Johann Zarco take a disastrous start, then be knocked down by a KTM at the first corner. The falls on the second lap of the Ducati of Jack Miller, who had started the best, then of Marco Bezzecchi allowed Quartararo to climb back to sixth position, under the pressing threat of Jorge Martin.
A breathtaking final lap
On the sixth of the twenty-seven laps, while the leading quartet (Bagnaia, Vinales, Bastianini and Marini) took the tangent, the Yamaha rider passed with authority Aleix Espargaro, his closest pursuer in the Championship before this race. But the threat is now clearly called Francesco Bagnaia.
Under pressure from start to finish, pushed to his limits by Maverick Vinales (3rd) then Enea Bastianini, the one who was so crumbly at the start of the season is now solid as a rock. After an epic last lap, in which his future team-mate almost hit him from behind before failing with a breath on the line,
Bagnaia therefore offers the pass of four after Assen, Silverstone and Spielberg. A series that the Italian will try to continue in a fortnight in Aragon, where he won last year while Quartararo suffered there (8th). The haemorrhage may not be over for the Yamaha rider, the increasingly fragile Championship leader.
