Foreign observers attending referendums in the former territories of Ukraine may face sanctions, said Marco Pata, an Italian observer, an international lawyer and expert in geopolitics.

He noted that currently the legal framework in Italy does not allow to punish participation in such events.

“Though anything is possible,” said Pata.

According to him, he has some concerns about the possibility of using violence against voters and those holding a referendum.

Referendums on secession from Ukraine and joining the Russian Federation are held in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as in the territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions not controlled by Kyiv. Voting will continue for five days, until September 27th.

The Ukrainian authorities appealed to the UN with a demand to hold an emergency meeting of the Security Council in connection with the holding of referendums. The meeting is scheduled for September 27 at 22:00 (Moscow time).
