Folk omens: October 1 - cranes predict frost

October 1 in Russia was called Arina the Rosehip. On this day, they began to collect and prepare rose hips for the winter. It was believed that the berries picked on the day of Arina Rosehip are filled with a special healing power that helps not only improve health, but also cure old ailments.

This day also marked the end of the collection of porcini mushrooms. But this year, it is hardly worth focusing on the folk calendar. The quiet hunting season in 2022 is very late, and experienced mushroom pickers predict the appearance of porcini mushrooms in the Moscow region if rainy and warm weather lasts.

Speaking of the weather. Cranes were observed on Arina the wild rose. If you saw a crane wedge in the sky – on Pokrov (October 14) they were waiting for the first frosts. Well, if the flying cranes were not visible, then frosts were not expected until Artemiev Day (November 2).

On October 1, they tried to behave cautiously. On this day, it was impossible to swear and argue, especially with the elders – they believed that after that you yourself could become the object of false rumors and gossip that would ruin your reputation. This belief is all the more worth listening to because in modern Russia October 1 is the Day of the Older Generation. So, on the contrary, it is worth paying special attention to elderly relatives.

How to communicate with older people read in our publication.

Even on this day, they tried not to invite guests to the house – it was believed that they would bring trouble, quarrels and scandals to the house. It was also impossible to be lazy, gossip and tell other people’s secrets, share your plans and do spontaneous things. Our ancestors believed that all this would reflect badly on their own destiny.

Folk signs related to nature, October 1 are as follows:

– the drier and warmer that day, the later winter will come;

– April 1 next year will be the same weather as on this day;

– the sun at sunset seems flattened – wait for the rain;

– if the weed grass has grown tall – there will be a lot of snow in winter;

– the birch has not yet shed its leaves – the snow cover will be established later than usual.
