FADN records reduction in migrants preferring Sharia law to legislation

The head of the Federal Agency for Nationalities Affairs (FADN) of Russia, Igor Barinov, announced a decrease in the number of migrants who prefer Sharia to secular legislation. According to a survey conducted by FADN, 35% of respondents held this position in 2023, while in 2022 their number exceeded 43.5%.

"Last year and the year before, we did a study on the protest potential of emigrants. In 2022, the numbers were simply horrifying - 43.5% did not want to live according to the laws of the Russian Federation, but wanted to live according to Sharia law. Last year, these numbers dropped to 35%, but in absolute numbers, these are millions of people who do not want to comply with the laws of our country," Igor Barinov said in an interview TASS on the sidelines of the WEF.

The results of a similar study on migrants' attitudes toward Russian legislation were presented by the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs in September 2023. However, the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs did not publish the survey results themselves. In response to Kommersant's request, the agency provided the wording of only four of the 15 questions in the questionnaire. Yevgeny Varshaver, head of the migration and ethnicity research group at RANEPA, told Kommersant that the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs' study was conducted in violation of "important methodological rules."
