Expert Lukin called Xi Jinping's words about the presidential elections in Russia a signal to the West

Alexander Lukin, director of the Center for East Asian and SCO Studies at MGIMO, explained why Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a conversation with Vladimir Putin, expressed hope that the Russian people would support him during the presidential elections next year. At the same time, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov later noted that these words do not mean the intention of Vladimir Putin to run.

According to Lukin, on the one hand, this is just a polite Chinese expression, but on the other hand, an act of support, because China sympathizes with Putin's policies.

"The fact that he went to Russia after being re-elected speaks various words of support - this is a signal to the West," leads words of the NSN expert.

Xi Jinping tried to tell the West that Russia is China's most important partner and Beijing is not going to give up on this under pressure from the West, Lukin said.

The expert also stressed that without Russia it would be more convenient for the West to deal with China, so Beijing understands that apart from Russia it has no other partner that would help in the event of a confrontation with the West.

"It would not be in China's interests to refuse Russia as a partner. They are not fools," Lukin summed up.
